The 6-Week Dinghy Instructor Course: Training Breakdown

Weeks 1-2

Week 1-2 of the dinghy instructor course is all about getting you comfortable on the water. You’ll sail daily, learning how to handle a dinghy in different wind conditions. Moreover, you’ll learn to fine-tune boat control, safety techniques, and wind awareness.

Through expert coaching, you will complete RYA Levels 1-3, ensuring you have the skills to move forward. Training in Lefkas offers warm waters and predictable breezes, making it the perfect place to fast-track your progress. By the end of this phase, you’ll be ready to take the next step toward becoming an instructor.

Week 3

You’ve mastered the basics. Now, it’s time to step into the role of an instructor. In Week 3 of the dinghy instructor course, you will start the RYA Assistant Instructor Course.

This course is about learning how to break down techniques and coach students effectively. You’ll also complete RYA Powerboat Level 2, essential for supporting sailors and running safety operations. As you refine your personal sailing ability, you’ll practice delivering instructions with clarity and confidence.

This is where you begin to think like an instructor, preparing for hands-on teaching experience in the next phase.

Gaining Real Experience in the Dinghy Instructor Course

Week 4

Week 4 of the dinghy instructor course is where theory meets reality. This is your chance to apply what you’ve learned in a busy RYA Training Centre. You will assist with real sailing lessons, helping students build confidence on the water.

Simultaneously, you’ll take on safety boat operations, ensuring smooth and secure sessions. Working alongside experienced instructors, you’ll gain hands-on experience in coaching, group management, and centre operations. By the end of the week, you’ll feel prepared to lead your own sessions.

As a result, this will set you up for final assessment in Week 5.

Weeks 5-6

The final two weeks of the dinghy instructor course focus on two things.  First, it’s about fine-tuning your skills and then proving you’re ready to teach. You’ll complete advanced training in Seamanship, Spinnaker handling, First Aid, and essential theory.

Then, it’s time for the Pre-entry Assessment and RYA Moderation. The Pre-entry Assessment will be conducted by an external RYA Trainer. This assessment gives candidates the perfect opportunity to showcase the sailing skills and techniques mastered during their training.

Additionally, following the assessment, Week 6 includes detailed sessions exploring essential RYA Instructor skills. Candidates will also learn key responsibilities and standards required for effective sailing instruction. At the week’s end, an external RYA Moderator will conduct a final moderation.

As a result, this ensures each candidate meets the rigorous standards set by the Royal Yachting Association. By the end of Week 6, you’ll graduate as a certified RYA Dinghy Instructor. You will be fully prepared to start your career on the water.
