Qualifications

What qualifications do I need?

We recommend that the skipper holds an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) as a minimum, which is equivalent to the RYA Day Skipper practical.

  1. No qualifications yet

You can still go. Book a skippered flotilla and sail with a professional skipper, book a cabin on the lead yacht of an explorer flotilla, or learn first at one of our RYA training centres.

  2. ICC or RYA Day Skipper

The recommended minimum for the skipper. These flotillas have the shortest passages and the most moderate conditions, so they are the natural place to start:

  3. More experience

In the Sporades and the Dodecanese, formal qualifications and more sailing experience are usually required. The explorers and the Caribbean trade winds also suit confident skippers.

Choosing a flotilla: your questions answered

Still deciding? These are the questions we are asked most often when people choose between our flotillas.

Still have a question?

Speak to our sailing team, or tell us your dates and ask for a quote.

020 8324 3118 Get a quote

Which flotilla is best for beginners?

Lefkas and Fethiye have the shortest passages, at around 10 nm a day, in relaxed conditions, so they are the easiest places to start. Kefalonia and Split are a good next step. The skipper should hold an ICC or equivalent; if you have no qualifications, you can book a skippered flotilla.

Which flotilla has the most wind?

The Dodecanese and the Sporades, where the meltemi brings Force 3 to 6, or more, from late July to late August. In the British Virgin Islands the trade winds are consistent, typically Force 4 and often Force 5.

What is the meltemi?

The meltemi is the summer wind of the Aegean. It is at its strongest from late July to late August, when it brings fresh sailing to the Sporades and the Dodecanese. In the Sporades, the southern sides of the islands often have flat water.

Where can I go flotilla sailing in winter?

Our Thailand flotilla sails from Phuket between January and April, with ten-night holidays starting on Sundays and Thursdays. The British Virgin Islands explorer departs on 13 February 2027 for two weeks.

Which flotillas sail in April?

In April 2027 you can join one of our two explorer flotillas from Messolonghi: Messolonghi to Korfos, departing on 7 April 2027 for 17 nights, or the Messolonghi Southern Explorer, departing on 10 April 2027 for two weeks. Our Thailand flotilla also sails until mid-April, and our weekly flotillas in Europe sail from May to October.

What is an explorer flotilla?

Explorer flotillas are longer voyages with a single departure date, covering more ground than a weekly flotilla: Messolonghi to Korfos and the Messolonghi Southern Explorer in April, Pula to Venice, Sicily and the Aeolian Islands, and the British Virgin Islands. You charter your own yacht, and on Pula to Venice, Sicily and the British Virgin Islands you can also book a cabin on the lead yacht and sail with the crew.

Can I join a flotilla if I am not a sailor?

Yes. You can book a skippered flotilla, where a professional skipper sails your yacht, or a cabin on the lead yacht of an explorer flotilla. If you would rather learn to sail yourself, see our RYA training centres.

Which day do the flotillas start?

Lefkas and Kefalonia run Sunday to Sunday. Corinth & Saronic, the Dodecanese, Split and Fethiye run Saturday to Saturday, and the Sporades runs Friday to Friday. Thailand starts on Sundays and Thursdays, and the explorers depart on a Saturday, apart from Messolonghi to Korfos, which leaves on Wednesday 7 April 2027.

Which flotilla is quickest to reach from the airport?

The British Virgin Islands, about 10 minutes from Beef Island airport, then Pula at about 20 minutes. Lefkas (from Preveza), the Dodecanese (Kos), Thailand (Phuket) and Sicily (Palermo) are each about 30 minutes away.

Are the prices on this page up to date?

Yes. Each From price is read automatically from that flotilla’s own price tables, so it shows the lowest yacht price for an upcoming date, including special offers. Weekly flotillas are priced per week, Thailand for ten nights and the explorers for the whole voyage. Full price tables are on each flotilla page, or you can ask us for a quote.
