A two-week cruise through the British Virgin Islands

We are delighted to announce our return to the British Virgin Islands, starting with a two-week explorer flotilla on 13 February 2027. We begin our journey at Hodges Creek Marina, just 10 minutes from Beef Island International Airport. In the two weeks you’ll be with us, we will visit as many of the 60 islands and islets that make up this archipelago as possible. Some of our favourites are Norman Island, Cooper Island, Anegada, Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke, and we will visit them all as we circumnavigate Tortola itself.

Most evenings will be spent on mooring buoys: secure and private, and perfect for an early-evening swim. Most locations have smaller wooden docks for our dinghies, making for an easy trip ashore for dinner and provisioning. The specific itinerary will depend on the weather, but we will certainly visit all the islands in the highlights below. The one exception is the middle Saturday of the flotilla, when we would like to be in Trellis Bay, home of the legendary “Full Moon Party”.

The BVI explorer route

Two weeks from Hodges Creek: the BVI flotilla heads east to Virgin Gorda and Anegada, then west round Tortola to Norman Island and Jost Van Dyke. The specific itinerary will depend on the weather, so the route maps below are indicative.

Amerindian peoples, first the Arawaks and later the seafaring Kalinago, navigated these waters by canoe long before Columbus sighted the islands in 1493, naming them for the legendary eleven thousand virgins of Saint Ursula. Spanish, Dutch and English sailors contested the archipelago’s sheltered anchorages, and by the late seventeenth century England had secured control, drawn by the deep-water channel now called the Sir Francis Drake Channel. Piracy flourished here, with figures like Blackbeard reputedly using Norman Island as a haunt, while Anegada’s treacherous reefs claimed hundreds of wrecks and sustained a local salvaging economy. Sugar and salt were shipped from Road Town’s harbour under sail, and the islands’ many protected coves made them ideal for both trade and evasion.

BVI flotilla weather and sailing conditions

February in the BVI is in the dry season, with north-easterly trade winds blowing consistently, occasionally veering easterly. Wind speed averages around 12 to 15 knots (force 4) but often freshens a bit, with force 5, touching 6, not uncommon, particularly when the “Christmas winds” linger.

These are cracking sailing conditions, with the Sir Francis Drake Channel protected from the north-easterly swell. Air temperatures are stable at around 28°C, and the sea is around 26°C. February is also one of the driest months, so for sailors it’s the perfect combination.

The BVI flotilla fleet at Hodges Creek Marina ranges from 35 to 44ft monohulls, as well as a range of catamarans. Alternatively, book a cabin on our lead yacht, a Jeanneau Sun Loft 47.

If you don’t have the crew to take your own yacht, why not join our crew on the lead (cabin charter) yacht? We will be using a spacious Sun Loft 47, with three large double and two smaller double cabins available (one double can be a twin), offering ample and flexible accommodation for crew and guests alike. You’ll join in with all the flotilla activities, and our experienced crew will be delighted to show you the ropes: get involved with the sailing as much or as little as you like, the choice is yours.

Getting to the BVI flotilla

There are several routes to choose from, whether you are joining us for the flotilla or combining it with a larger trip. We are at Hodges Creek Marina, just 10 minutes by car from Terrance B. Lettsome Airport, formerly known as Beef Island Airport, the main airport for the BVI. The flotilla starts on Saturday: yachts are usually ready to board by 17:00 on the first day, and you then disembark at around 09:00 at the end of the flotilla.

  • Flights

    Flights from London to the BVI via Antigua offer the minimum journey time, with either British Airways or Virgin Atlantic. Other routings are possible, via Barbados or via the US and Puerto Rico with US carriers. Flights are available from around £1,000 per person, depending on total journey time and routing.


  • Taxi

    The easiest way to reach Hodges Creek Marina is by taxi, readily available outside the terminal. The guideline price is $30 for 1 to 2 passengers, or $12 per passenger for larger parties. The journey takes 10 minutes, or 15 in the rush hour.
