Excellent sailing in the Northern Sporades

If you have already enjoyed sailing in the Ionian and the Saronic Gulf, why not try one of our more challenging sailing areas, the Northern Sporades? With fresh breezes that strengthen with the summer meltemi winds, the open waters of the Sporades offer excellent sailing.

Each day on the water then ends with a wonderful mix of cosmopolitan towns on our island route, such as Skiathos and Skopelos, sleepy little hamlets like Steni Vala, and deserted island bays such as Kyra Panagia. For culture vultures, you can also visit some of the locations of the hit film Mamma Mia, or simply anchor and relax on one of the stunning sandy beaches.

In contrast, the Pelion route explores the Gulf of Volos and its islands as well as the northern part of Evia (Evvia) island. Paleo Trikeri and “Donkey” island are must-see destinations as you explore the crystal-clear waters on your Sporades flotilla holiday.

How the Sporades flotilla week works

  • Flotillas run Friday to Friday
  • Yachts are ready by 17:00 on day one; you disembark at around 09:00 on the last day
  • Fly to Skiathos, then a short ferry ride to Loutraki on Skopelos.
  • Our flotilla crew also brief you fully each day
  • Two flotilla routes in alternate weeks, which you can also combine into a two-week Sporades sailing holiday

Two Sporades flotilla routes in alternate weeks

The Sporades flotilla runs two routes: odd weeks sail the Sporades route, while even weeks sail the Pelion route. Full details of both are below, and you can also combine them into an epic two-week holiday.

The Sporades route

The Sporades, in the azure waters of the Aegean Sea, are a sailor’s paradise, renowned for their unspoilt beauty and ideal sailing conditions. The archipelago’s scattered layout also creates an enticing maze of islands, perfect for exploring by boat.

With steady breezes and plenty of safe harbours and secluded coves, the region is tailor-made for days spent sailing from one charming island to another. The crystal-clear waters invite you to anchor and swim off the boat, while lush greenery and rugged coastlines provide a stunning backdrop. So sailing in the Sporades promises adventure, as well as an escape into serene natural beauty that captivates and relaxes in equal measure.

Weather and sailing conditions

Expect reliable sunshine and good sailing winds, with flat seas along the southern side of the islands. Temperatures range from the low 20s at the beginning and end of the season to the high 30s in August. Meanwhile, winds are moderate to fresh, at force 3 to 6, with the upper range during the late July and August meltemi season, so it is great for experienced sailors.

Not included: mooring charges (except at the flotilla base), canal fees, extra fuel or water, food and drinks, and personal items such as laundry. For sail and stay holidays, transfers from the yacht base to your accommodation are usually excluded and payable locally, unless you book a flight-inclusive package.

Skippered flotilla sailing

These yachts are usually skippered by guests who hold the right qualifications, but we can also provide a skipper if you have no previous sailing experience. You still get all the benefits of sailing as part of a flotilla: meeting others in the evenings or during the day, organised activities for children, and all the usual pleasures of yachting, from exploring and swimming in secluded bays to the simple joy of travelling under sail.

Getting to the Sporades flotilla

There are plenty of ways to reach our base on Skopelos, whether you’re joining us for a week or combining the flotilla with a longer trip. We’re in Loutraki harbour, on the north-west coast of the island, so it’s easy to reach by public or private transport. Seafarer flotillas in Skopelos run Friday to Friday: yachts are usually ready to board by 17:00 on the first day, and you then disembark at around 09:00 at the end of the flotilla.

  • Flights

    Direct Friday flights to Skiathos airport from London (Gatwick, City and Stansted), Nottingham, Newcastle, Manchester and Birmingham, as well as from other European airports. A wide range of flights is also available during the week.


  • Ferry

    Seafarer organises your transfer from Skiathos to Loutraki by regular direct ferry, plus a short taxi on Skiathos. Regular public ferries also run to Skiathos, Skopelos town, Volos and Alonissos, with less regular ferries to the north of Evia.


  • Bus and taxi

    Local buses run a couple of times a day from Loutraki to Skopelos town and other parts of the island. Taxis and hire cars are also available locally.
