Taking your family or friends out on a catamaran is something most sailors have dreamed about. With en-suite cabins, a generator and air conditioning, catamarans offer exceptional space and comfort. Consequently, they are perfect for tempting non-sailors to give sailing a go. But if you have never skippered one before, it can be a daunting prospect.

This 7-night catamaran training course runs aboard a Lagoon 400. It is a classic mid-size catamaran, equipped with 4 en-suite cabins, a generator and air conditioning, as well as all the usual electronics and instrumentation.

It is suitable for experienced monohull sailors who want to move across to cats, as well as qualified sailors who want professional catamaran tuition. You can also complete the RYA Day Skipper qualification during this course.

Course Content

Skills You Will Practise

  • Handling and close-quarters manoeuvring, especially the correct use of twin engines
  • Anchoring and mooring techniques, particularly Mediterranean stern-to mooring
  • Advanced sail trim in light airs as well as heavy weather
  • Managing an inexperienced crew while ensuring they get the best out of the experience
  • Looking after your charter yacht, such as understanding onboard systems and the basic do’s and don’ts
  • Basics of troubleshooting, as well as on-the-go fixes
  • Additionally, all items on the RYA Day Skipper syllabus
  • Choosing the right yacht for your party, whether for flotilla or bareboat

The Southern Ionian: Your Catamaran Training Ground

We run this catamaran training course from our Seafarer Training base at Agia Eufimia, Kefalonia in the Ionian. It is the perfect starting point to explore the Southern Ionian islands, and it is conveniently close to Kefalonia International Airport.

The Ionian usually provides gentle sailing conditions: light to moderate winds in protected waters, with generally north-westerly prevailing winds. As a result, you get consistent and enjoyable sailing. During October the weather can be a little more changeable, which adds useful variety to the experience.

The Ionian is known for its sheltered, predictable conditions, which are ideal for catamaran training. Light to moderate north-westerly winds dominate, so you get consistent sailing as well as anchorages in beautiful island coves.

The Training Yacht

Lagoon 400: The Catamaran Training Yacht

The Lagoon 400 is the perfect mid-size catamaran for training. With 4 en-suite cabins, a large saloon and a spacious cockpit, it also provides an excellent introduction to catamaran sailing.

Sail controls are led back to the helm station, which is raised in order to offer an excellent all-round view. This is particularly important when you learn the twin-engine characteristics during close-quarters manoeuvring. Please note that all images are indicative of this model rather than the specific vessel used for training.

Getting There & Away

There are many ways to travel to our base on the island of Kefalonia, whether by air or by sea. Embarkation is from 17:00 on a Sunday, then you sail the following morning.

    There are direct Sunday flights to Kefalonia International Airport from Gatwick, Stansted, Bristol, Nottingham, Birmingham and Manchester. Further UK and European flights run through the week.

    Direct Seafarer transfers from Kefalonia Airport take roughly 1 hour, so you reach our base at Agia Eufimia in good time.
