Yacht charter in St Martin, half French, half Dutch

You will find two worlds, French and Dutch, side by side on this dazzling 34-square-mile island in the north-east Caribbean. Christopher Columbus named it in 1493; today the north is French Saint Martin and the south Dutch Sint Maarten, one island with two languages and cultures, both blessed with stunning beaches, emerald seas and secluded coves.

Go Dutch in Philipsburg for vibrant Caribbean nightlife, lively casinos and the local rum-based Guavaberry liqueur, or shop in French Marigot and sample world-class French and Caribbean cuisine. Painters and musicians have made the island their home, and the hike up Pic Paradis, at 424 metres, is worth the effort.

We sail from Lagoon Marina in well-sheltered Simpson Bay on the Dutch side, and a short sail takes you into France. This is classic Leeward Island sailing: Anguilla is half a day away, along with other local islands, some of them deserted. Sailing here suits intermediate to experienced sailors, with winds regularly between Force 3 and 6 and some open water, so Day Skipper standard is recommended. The dry high season runs from December to May, with temperatures close to 30°C and east-northeast trade winds; from June to November winds are more variable and it is warmer.
